This quiz illustrates the diversity of the English-speaking world. The words in the answers came into the English language from different languages. They reflect cultural diversity - people of different nationalities and ethnicities, etc., mixing together, and often adopting cultural behaviours as well as the language.

This is a Businessballs Quizballs free quiz. Quizballs provides free quiz questions and answers for trivia quizzes, team games, pub quizzes, general knowledge, learning and amusement. Two answers are required for each question -

How many do you know? Some of the source languages are surprising.

 

  1. Dust or camouflage colour or material? Khaki - Urdu (official language of Pakistan - also ancient in India, influenced by Persian and Arabic - Khaki derives originally from kak, Persian for dust)
  2. Specialized raiding party soldier? Commando - Portuguese (originally referred to Boers in S Africa)
  3. Fondness for travel? Wanderlust - German
  4. View, and replacement windows? Vista - Italian (meaning view, from visto, seen - Vista was also a not especially successful replacement for Microsoft's Windows computer operating system)
  5. Slaughterhouse? Abattoir - French (from abbattre, meaning to fell or cut down)
  6. Cross symbol with loop for top element? Ankh - Egyptian (meaning life or soul - the symbol resembles a person)
  7. Returning hunting weapon? Boomerang - Aboriginal (native Australian)
  8. Business magnate, originally 'great prince'? Tycoon - Japanese (came into Japanese from Chinese 'da jun')
  9. Gambling house? Casino - Italian (originally a public meeting room or summer house)
  10. Hot Indian curry thought to refer originally to 'wine garlic sauce'? Vindaloo - Portuguese (probably from 'vin d'alho', wine and garlic [sauce])
  11. Popular animated movie and personal web pic? Avatar - Sanskrit (less correctly Indian or Hindu - Sanskrit is the ancient Indo-European language, used in Indian Hindu and classical writings, which persists today in Indian religious and scholarly work - Avatar meant originally away and pass over, and more recently means embodiment)
  12. Dance event or nightclub? Disco or fully Discotheque - French (originally referred to a record library)
  13. The Virgin Mary? Madonna - Italian (meaning 'my lady')
  14. Firm imposed instruction or resolution? Diktat - German
  15. Whirlpool or great turbulence? Maelstrom - Dutch (from maalen, grind or whirl around)
  16. Vast Arctic mashlands with underlying permafrost? Tundra - Lappish (Lapps - now called Sami or Saami - are the indigenous people from the extreme north of Europe including parts of Norway, Sweden, Finland, and Russia, a region referred to now as Sápmi)
  17. Racial segregation? Apartheid - Afrikaans (or more loosely and slightly less correctly South African, it means literally 'apart-hood')
  18. Small one-person closed watertight canoe? Kayak - Inuit (or less politically correct, Eskimo)
  19. Small four-stringed guitar? Ukulele - Hawaiian (it means 'jumping flea')
  20. Unexpected good fortune or prosperous success? Bonanza - Spanish (technically US-Spanish - originally meaning fair weather or prosperity)
