introduction

The site and functionality are under continuous development.

Web browsers (Explorer, Firefox, etc) behave differently. We've done our best to accommodate Safari and Firefox, but Microsoft Internet Explorer is the most commonly used browser by the website's visitors, so that's where the emphasis has had to be applied.

Registration is required in order to create your profile, webpages, to blog and to upload resources files, for which you must be over 16, or older if your own national laws say so.

There is no age limit for browsing and downloading from the site.

Downloading files from any website carries risks. Ensure your computer has up-to-date protection against viruses, etc.

Please ensure any files you upload are safe to use.

You can upload typical 'office' media (word-processed, text, spreadsheets, presentations, etc) and other media such as pictures, sound and video. No executables please (exe, php, asp, etc).

To be able to create your presence in the Space on Businessballs you need first to register.

Then you can create your own profile, which will enable you to be found by people seeking you, whatever your interest, aims, needs and offerings are, in work and life.

Only add to your profile what you want people to see.

You can control whether your email address is public or private after activating your registration.

Space encourages the creation and uploading of content that is positive, ethical, and helpful.

Helpful and and useful content will attract interest and popularity.

You may not add revenue-generating advertising on the Businessballs website, such as pay-per-click search listings or any other revenue-generating advertising which promotes someone else's products or services. If someone wants to be featured on the website, they are free to register and create a presence for themselves.

You can however certainly advertise and link to your own organisation, products, services, etc., and you can certainly recommend and publicize and link to other good ethical suppliers, providers, charities, resources, etc., just as long as you don't take a fee for doing so.

You can also create your own listings and reviews of content on the Space. Anyone can become a sub-editor in this Space. If you do, let me know. Good listings and review pages will be featured on Space Highlights.

If you've not see it yet please read about the Space on Businessballs.

Also please look at the terms and conditions of using the Space on Businessballs website.

If you have a comment, suggestion or feedback please contact us.

registering

You must be over 16 years of age to register with Businessballs, or older if the laws of your land say so.

The terms and conditions and about Space provide helpful explanation for using the Space on Businessballs.

You can control whether your email address is public or private after activating your registration. It will be private unless you change it to public.

your spacename (username)

Your Spacename is your username for login.

Spacenames must be 10-25 characters. Permitted characters are letters, numbers, hyphen (-) and underscore (_).

Spacenames are not case-sensitive (you can use upper or lower case).

Word spaces are not permitted - instead use a hyphen (-) or underscore (_).

Your Spacename will appear in the space listings alongside your content.

Your Spacename is also be your folder name on the website and will form part of your URL (website address on Space).

So choose a Spacename that is suitable - ideally based on your own name, a nickname, or your business name.

Spacenames that are stand-alone generic descriptive words or phrases such as 'psychometrics' or 'personaldevelopment' or 'trainingmaterials' or 'teambuilding' are not encouraged. Nor are Spacenames permitted which seek to 'squat' on a name which belongs to someone else, such as a brand name.

If you really feel the need to register a strong generic spacename please make good use of it - otherwise you may lose it.

Spacenames containing the word balls are not permitted. If your name or your business name contains this word then contact me and we'll try to make an exception..

Spacenames that are not registered in good faith or which attract complaints will be liable for removal.

password

Your password can be anything up to 15 characters long - letters and/or numbers - not case-sensitive.

first name and surname

Insert your first name and surname and your email address.

This can be amended after activating your registration.

email address

Your email address will be private unless you set it to public after activating your registration.

You can add a second email address after activating your registration, which you can also set to public if you wish.

Your first email address cannot be changed other than by special request.

Your second email address can be changed by you at any time by logging in and clicking on 'my profile'.

short description and geographical area

When you register, these two fields are optional (geographical area introduced March 2007), and are limited to the number characters that display in the Space listings.

The first 35-40 characters of your 'short description' and the first 10 characters of your geographical area 'reach' will appear in the Space listing. (Exact number of characters varies because some characters are wider than others.)

These brief details in your short desciption and geographical area will help people see quickly what you offer or seek and where.

These fields are helpful to you - the information appears alongside your name in the search and display listings.

As the Space becomes busier and more populated these short descriptions of what you offer (or what you seek) and where you are or what area you cover will become increasingly important.

People viewing the listings will not bother to click on names which have no descriptions attached. People looking for specific types of providers, services and geographical indicators will be attracted to appropriate descriptions alongside people's names in listings.

While registering you must confirm your agreement with the terms and conditions of the Space website.

When you register you will be sent an email asking you to validate your registration by clicking on a weblink.

This is to ensure registrations are legitimate, and to protect people from being registered by someone else, and hopefully to prevent automated multiple registrations and other nuisances.

Therefore ensure your email protections do not block the validation email from Businessballs, otherwise you will not be able to complete your registration.

Registration has initially been designed to work with MS Internet Explorer. Firefox (Netscape) and Safari should also work, although maybe not always so well. In the future this functionality will be improved and extended.

creating your profile

You must register before you can create your profile.

Completing your profile is optional but recommended, if you want to be found.

Provide only the details you wish, however if you want to be found, the more detail you provide, the easier people will find you in the listings and via the search tool.

Decide if your email address is to be private or public and check or uncheck the box as appropriate.

Details you provide about yourself will be visible to website visitors, so only provide what you are happy for others to see.

short description and geographical area of your 'reach'

When you register, these fields are optional, and limited to the characters that display in the Space listings.

The first 35-40 characters of your 'short description' and the first 10 characters of your geographical area 'reach' will appear in the Space listing. (Exact number of characters varies because some characters are wider than others.)

This brief information in your short desciption and geographical area will help people see quickly what you offer or seek and where.

These fields are helpful to you because they display alongside your name in the search and display listings.

Check how your descriptions look in the listings and edit them accordingly.

Use the long description and the remainder of your profile to provide people with more details about you.

More people will see your long description and everything else in your full profile if they see something they like in your short description in the Space listings.

If you are using Space to find a job or clients or contracts, then be sure to make use of the 'offering' description to describe your strengths in terms of what employers or clients might be seeking.

The way you describe yourself will help others to know something about you and/or your business, what you want, and what you offer.

If you want to provide more information about yourself to visitors, potential customers, employers, etc., for example full business address and details of services, or a cv/resume, then do this within your webpages and/or uploaded resources.

Where appropriate insert commas between key words and phrases. This will enable the search facility to find you according to your descriptions of yourself.

The search tool initially looks for the exact phrase or shorter, so think about the search phrases by which you want to be found, and ensure these appear in your profile.

You can edit or delete your profile details at any time.

This includes controlling whether your email address is public or private.

Businessballs is a very popular website, therefore email addresses that appear on the site are likely to attract increased levels of spam, so if you show your email address you are recommended to have some sort of spam filter on your computer system.

While logged in, to view newly listed content while logged in click 'home'.

To return to your admin (edit and upload) pages click on 'admin'.

creating webpages

The Space website now contains quite a clever webpage editor (it was upgraded March 2007).

You can type straight into the webpage editor and change the appearance of your webpages using the tools. You can also paste text straight into the editor from a text document or other file.

You can also insert HTML (webpage code), and other sorts of webpage code. Here are some simple html webpage code examples and tips.

Create your homepage first, and ensure you give it a clear and relevant description. This is especially important because everyone's homepage has the same filename - index.htm - so a good short description will help people to see quickly your subject, offering, interest or specialism.

Your Space homepage will have the address: http://space.businessballs.com/yourspacename

It will also have the address: www.space.businessballs.com/yourspacename

When you link from one page in Space to another page in Space using the link tool-button use the format: space.businessballs.com/yourspacename/ or space.businessballs.com/yourspacename/filename (including the filename extension).

Upload and manage webpage images (jpg's and gif's, etc) by using the 'insert image' tool button.

The best way to learn how to use the webpage editor is to try it.

The webpage is an online tool and as such it will generate slightly more complex code than you might be used to seeing, but the effect of what is displayed, and how the webpage behaves, should be exactly the same.

If you need to, see the simple html webpage code examples and tips. Using html webpage design code is quite easy, and very empowering.

You can 'copy and paste' text from a word processing document straight into the webpage editor. (Select/highlight the text, press Ctrl C, move cursor to destination, press Ctrl V). And then change its apperance using the webpage editor toolbuttons.

Or you can 'copy and paste' HTML (webpage code) from an already created webpage.

Experiment. You can delete or change anything.

To insert images or other files into your webpage you will need first to upload them, and then to create a link to them for them to appear in your webpage. Upload images using the 'insert image' button. Upload other items that you want to link to by using the 'my resources' functionality which is on the main logged in left-side menu.

A basic knowledge of html will help your webpage creation enormously. Using html webpage code is empowering and quite easy to learn at a simple level. See the simple html webpage code examples and tips.

You can place links in your webpages to other websites, including your own.

If you want to produce a better guide to creating webpages on Businessballs (and doing anything else on Businessballs for that matter) please feel free to do so, and let me know the URL (link) so I can add it to the highlights page and point others to your material.

Inserting large amounts of webpage code takes longer than smaller additions and changes.

We will continue to improve the webpage creation functionality.

While logged in, to view newly listed content while logged in click 'home'.

To return to your admin (edit and upload) pages click on 'admin'.

uploading resources and files

You can upload files such as word processing and spreadsheet documents, presentations.

Occasionally internet browsers or local connection settings cause uploading problems - if so, trying a different browser can often resolve matters. The excellent free browser Firefox is an alternative to MS Internet Explorer, and vice-versa.

You can upload pdf's of brochures, training courses programmes and lists, flyers for events, seminars, exhibitions, booking forms, etc.

Sound and video clips too.

A video of yourself, for example can be a useful addition to a CV.

Or if you are selling or promoting a service or product - anything - a video will help people to understand what it is.

Maximum file size is 15MB. Total space allocation per Spacename is 100MB.

Obviously the bigger the file the longer it will take to upload. Try to make efficient use of your webspace.

Insert a short description for each resource you upload. This will appear in the content listings alongside your resource to help people understand what it is.

Also add keywords and phrases, separated by commas, to help people find you resources using the search facility.

Please ensure files you upload are safe to use.

You can upload typical 'office' media (word-processor, text, spreadsheets, presentations, etc) and other media such as pictures, sound and video.

No executables please (exe, php, asp, com, bat, js, pif, etc).

While logged in, to view newly listed content while logged in click 'home'.

To return to your admin (edit and upload) pages click on 'admin'.

bawls (a sort of blog..)

Compared to other blogging websites, the Bawls blog is basic and simple. The improved editing and appearance tools were introduced in March 2007.

First create a bawl with a title and description. Do not post your Bawl into the description box.

After submitting your Bawl title and description, you will be taken to the Bawl editor, into which you can post your entry, and change the appearance of your Bawl using the tool buttons.

To add new postings to your Bawl click on 'my bawls' , then click name of your Bawl, then click on 'add a new post'.

You can create a new bawl for a new main subject, or when a bawl contains many entries and becomes unwieldy.

Within reason there are no size limits for bawls (or the entries within them) - it's up to you when to start a new one.

As with webpages and resources you can describe each bawl you create, which will help convey what your bawl is about when it is listed on the site.

Use commas between descriptive key words and phrases so that the search facility will find your bawl when people seek the descriptions you've used.

While logged in, to view newly listed content while logged in click 'home'.

To return to your admin (edit and upload) pages click on 'admin'.

(Apparently - according to the Guardian Technology section, 25 Jan 2007 - 94% of all comments in blogs are spam links, inserted by people aiming to improve their website search engine rankings. In which case it's sensible we protect our Bawls from such interference. If you want to comment on a Bawl send the writer an email, and if your comments are worthy they'll probably welcome them, and include them in their next posting, just as you might do in a similar situation. )

search and display

Category-based listings were launched on the home page and logged in page on 31 August 2007. You can suggest new categories to be added. These listings are primarily driven by page popularity. Page view counts were introduced at the same time and will be improved.

You also can also continue to search profiles and other content by using the search box top-right of screen on the listings pages.

The search tool was upgraded in March 2007. Feedback about how we might improve it further is welcome.

If you want people to find your content you must describe it in the descriptions and keywords boxes.

The short description in your profile is especially important, as is the geographical reach, because these show in the listings.

Profiles and content can be seen on the Space home page, by clicking the links: webpages, bawls (blogs), resources (media files) and profiles. These links display profiles and content in order of most recently added or updated.

Updated content and profiles appear at the top of the full listings, and retain the date originally created.

Content and profiles appear in the search listings according to other criteria aimed at producing best match, but we are not Google and so our results will not be as reliable as theirs until popularity and other factors are introduced.

You can stay at the top of the full listings by updating your content and profile. The category listings on the home page and logged in home page are driven mainly by popularity (page views).

You will feature strongest in the search listings if you describe yourself and your content well.

Progressively the order of listings will be determined by more subtle means, including tailored search criteria options.

Good content will be featured on the Space Highlights, assuming you tell me about it.

Good content will also be listed by Google and other good search engines.

Good content will in time be listed by other registered users of Space. Anyone is free to create listings and/or reviews of Space content. So if you've ever fancied being a sub-editor now's your chance.

If you create a listings or review section, please let me know. Good listings and review sections will be added to Space Highlights.

At any time you can contact me to inform me that you have posted some particularly good content, and if appropriate I will include a link to it on the original part of the website among my own links and materials, as well as adding the link to Space Highlights, which will also be featured in the Businessballs.com website listings.

When more people and content are added to Space you will maximise your visibility and your appeal to visitors by ensuring your content is helpful and interesting.

As a general rule for creating a popular presence on the internet, content that gives and educates is more powerful than content than merely sells and promotes.
